What is Polyglot?
A polyglot is a person who speaks several languages — commonly understood as four or more, learned by choice rather than upbringing. It differs from 'multilingual', which usually describes people raised with multiple languages, and from 'hyperpolyglot', reserved for the rare speakers of a dozen or more.
Studied polyglots share habits more than talent: they study daily in short sessions, prioritise speaking early, accept mistakes cheerfully, and reuse the learning system that worked for language two on languages three through six.
The community's open secret is that languages within a family discount each other steeply. A Spanish speaker learning Portuguese or Italian is playing on easy mode — which is how many polyglots' impressive counts are built, and there's nothing wrong with that strategy.
What it means for your speaking
Ask polyglots their regret about their first language and the answer is remarkably consistent: 'I waited too long to speak.' By language three, nearly all of them speak from day one.
