What is Immersion?
Immersion means surrounding yourself with a language so completely that using it becomes necessity rather than study — living where it's spoken, or engineering your daily media, phone settings and conversations so the language fills your environment.
Full immersion — moving to the country — is famously effective, but not for magic reasons: it works because it forces thousands of hours of comprehensible input and unavoidable speaking practice. Tourists who live in expat bubbles prove that geography alone teaches nothing.
Home immersion recreates the mechanism: phone in the target language, shows without your native subtitles, podcasts on the commute, and — the piece most people skip — regular forced speaking.
The research consensus: immersion's power is the sheer volume of input plus the necessity of output. Recreate those two and you capture most of the benefit without a plane ticket.
