Privacy Policy
Last updated 1 July 2026
Yap is a daily speaking-practice app operated by Dettwiler Ventures AB (“Yap,” “we,” “us”), based in Malmö, Sweden. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Yap you agree to this policy.
Information we collect
- Account information — your email address (and, optionally, a display name and a generated avatar) used to create and secure your account.
- Practice data — the language and level you choose, your conversation transcripts, session lengths, streaks, ratings, and the highlights generated from your chats.
- Voice — when you speak, your microphone audio is streamed in real time to OpenAI(our third-party AI provider — see “Third-party AI” below) to power the conversation and to transcribe what you said. We store the resulting text transcript; we do not store raw audio recordings.
- Subscription status — whether you have an active Yap Pro subscription. Payments are processed by Apple; we never receive your card details.
- Basic technical data — limited device and usage information needed to run and debug the service.
How we use your data
- To provide the core service — run your voice conversations and transcribe them.
- To track your streak, calendar, and progress over time.
- To generate personalized tips and adjust difficulty to your level.
- To manage your subscription and provide customer support.
- To keep the app secure and fix problems.
We do not sell your personal data.
Third-party AI (OpenAI)
Yap’s conversations are powered by OpenAI, a third-party artificial-intelligence service. To generate your tutor’s spoken replies in real time, we send OpenAI:
- the audio of your voice while you are speaking during a session;
- the text of what you and the tutor say (your conversation transcript);
- the language and proficiency level you have chosen.
OpenAI uses this data solely to provide the conversation, transcribe your speech, and produce the short post-session highlights and word translations you request. Under OpenAI’s API data-usage policy, your data is notused to train OpenAI’s models, and OpenAI provides protection for your data equivalent to that described in this policy (including a data-processing agreement and Standard Contractual Clauses for international transfers). We ask for your explicit consent inside the app before any of this data is sent to OpenAI for the first time, and you can decline.
Service providers we share with
We use a small number of trusted providers to operate Yap. They process data only on our behalf:
- OpenAI — real-time voice conversation and speech transcription.
- Supabase — account authentication and secure database hosting for your profile and transcripts.
- Apple & RevenueCat — processing and managing your subscription.
International transfers
Some providers (such as OpenAI) process data on servers located in the United States. Where data leaves the EU/EEA, it is transferred under appropriate safeguards such as the Standard Contractual Clauses.
Data retention
We keep your account and practice data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete your associated data, except where we must retain limited records to meet legal or accounting obligations.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the EU GDPR), you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights — or to delete your account and data — email us at contact@talkyap.com.
Children
Yap is not directed to children under 13 (or under the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date above and, for significant changes, provide additional notice.
